Beauty Runs MORE Than Skin Deep
For Alexis Burkes, a senior Public Health major, beauty runs more than skin deep.
Alexis serves as the reigning Miss Savannah USA and is set to compete in the 2013 Miss Georgia USA pageant in Cartersville, Ga., serving as the only contestant from Chatham County. However, this 21-year-old beauty queen is more than just a pretty face. She’s also a Dean’s List student, a Student Government Association Senator of the Month, president of Collaboration Models, and a member of Armstrong’s gospel choir.
“I love the fact that there are so many student organizations at Armstrong,” she says. “It’s easy to get involved.”
Alexis is completing her bachelor’s degree in public health and applying to veterinary schools to pursue her dream career. “My ultimate goal is to be a vet,” she explains. “I never wanted to do anything else. I’ve always loved animals.”
At the age of 9, Alexis started a pet sitting business with her parents. An avid Animal Planet fan, she dreams of working with exotic cats like lions and tigers.
“I’d love to do wild cat conservation,” she explains. “That’s really my passion. I’d love to do something exciting in the veterinary field.”
Alexis believes Armstrong serves as an ideal launching point for her career, enabling her to take the undergraduate courses necessary for admission to veterinary school and to refine her leadership skills through community involvement on campus.
“Armstrong has a great curriculum,” she enthuses. “The professors are outstanding. I’ve had a great time here. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
